I made this chess set in 3DS Max. I used a few different techniques to model the pieces...mostly lathing. The knight was made with a spline cage. I used a Boolean subtraction for the divot in the bishop, and extruded the battlements on the queen and the rook. The cross on the king was made separately with a line that was extruded and mirrored, and later attached to the king. The materials are totally procedural, as the type of models need to have map coordinates otherwise. I'm not completely done with the board, and I think I may tweek the materials a bit, but this is the general idea. Eventually, I want to make an animation of the pieces moving around.
