Most Muslims are aware of and try to avoid the major sins in Islam -murder, suicide, adultery, alcohol, gambling, usury, etc. Muslims areforbidden to harm themselves or others. Yet millions of Muslims all over the world are doing just that - harming, even killing themselves and their families. Islamic scholars have historically had mixed views on thesubject, and the actions of these Muslims have not been unanimouslyforbidden or even discouraged. The danger is tobacco use - cigarette and cigar smoking, chew, etc. The mixed views on the subject came about because cigarettes are a more recent invention and did not exist at the time of the revelation of the Qur'an in the 7th century A.D. Therefore, one cannot find a verse of Qur'an or words of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) saying clearly that"Cigarettee smoking is forbidden." However, there are many instanceswhere the Qur'an gives us general guidelines, and calls upon us to use our reason and intelligence, and seek guidance from Allah about what is right and wrong. In the Qur'an, Allah says, ...he [the Prophet] commands them what is just, and forbids them what is evil; he allows them as lawful what is good, and prohibits them from what is bad..." (Surah al-Araf 7:157).So what are the evils of tobacco use, for your health and for your deen(religion)?Smoking and Health Effects It is very well known that cigarette smoking is the most widespread example of drug dependence in the United States. A pamphlet released by the U.S. Surgeon General's Office entitled "Why People Smoke Cigarettes" calls cigarette smoking America's worst drug addiction problem. It involves addiction to the drug nicotine in tobacco and possible other tobacco substances. An authoritative British report (1) stated that tobacco smoking is a form of drug dependence different from but no less strong than that of other addictive drugs—the most stable and well-adjusted person will, if he smokes at all, almost inevitably become dependent on the habit. An Australian government report of 1977 called Drug Problems in Australia - An Intoxicated Society (2), says, "It is important to recognize that smoking is a form of drug dependence, but one with especially insidious characteristics."Like many other drugs, the chemicals in cigarette affect the chemistry of the brain and nervous system and create dependence and lead to compulsive use. More than 56 million Americans and multiple scores of millions more in other nations, including Islamic nations (3) are hooked on cigarettes in the same way as caffeine addicts are hooked on caffeine. A major reason why sales continue at high levels despite widespread public knowledge about the health hazards is the addictive nature of cigarettes. Most people start smoking just to conform to peer or social pressures. They get a feeling of "grown up." They find smoking (nicotine) at first acts as a stimulant. Later they find they need to smoke as a tranquilizer. These smokers develop a level of tolerance and bodily adjustment to nicotine. If this level of nicotine is not maintained in their blood, they will experience uncomfortable physical-psychological dependence problems. These uncomfortable feelings are classic drug withdrawal symptoms. Addictive drugs are psychoactive which create brain and nervous system dependence and lead to compulsive use. Abrupt discontinuation leads to physiological and psychological distress. The withdrawal symptoms are headache, stomach discomfort, nervousness, irritability, sweating, change in heart and blood pressure and lower excretion of some hormones affecting the nervous system (4). The former U.S. Surgeon General, C. Everett Coop, says, "Cigarette smoking is clearly identified as the chief preventable cause of death (340,000 deaths per year in U.S.A.). In our society it is a major factor in the development of many cases of cancer, heart trouble, chronic lung and respiratory diseases and other ailments. Smoking causes more illnesses and death than all the other drugs."(5)Proof Hookah/sheesha is worse then cigarettes http://time.blogs.com/daily_rx/2006/10/hold_the_hookah.htmlhttp://www.webmd.com/smoking-cessation/news/20040601/pipes-hookahs-pose-same-risks-cigars

Nov 14, 2008 - well theres something about gambling and drinking that dont quite equate to smoking. you cant smoke too much and lose control of your judgement, which is the case with the latter. smoking will never tempt you to sin....if it is a sin, then eating unhealthy food should be considered a sin...

Nov 14, 2008 - My computer speakers are broken so I couldn't hear it. Could you just post what the verse is?The number of people dying from tobacco use is not proportional to those dying from occasional hookah use. Please show me how many people statistically die SPECIFICALLY from smoking hookah. When you smoke hookah, you're not actually "Smoking", as the tobacco is not being burnt, just roasted at low temperature. This means there is little to no tar entering your lungs, so its not really that unhealthy.

Nov 15, 2008 - U wud live longer if u didnt and live more healthier

Nov 15, 2008 - the verse is also writen on the video at 12 sec it starts with do not destroy yourselves.Hookah/shisha is way worse then cigarettes. it was thought long ago that it wasnt and it was invented as a healthier way to smoke but recent studies found that is over a 100 times worse. i'll add the link with the proof to the description area.

Nov 16, 2008 - I know what study you're talking about, and in that study, the temperature at which the tobacco was burned was 650 degrees. That study was inaccurate. Tar forms at an exponentially higher rate, the higher the temperature its burned at is. With a hookah, the tobacco is not burned at nearly as high a temp. as with a cigarette. Theres also unhealthy preservatives, etc, in cigarettes that arent in shisha.Wouldn't that verse also make skateboarding and fastfood haraam?

Nov 16, 2008 - Also, my dad is muslim and the majority of his muslim friends (and himself) have very big anger issues. They seem to be angry ALL THE TIME, I personally think if they drank , smoked hookah, etc, once in a while, that'd take them off edge a little and they wouldn't be as angry. Being angry is very stressful and can cause more health problems (ulcers, high blood pressure, cardiovascular problems) than smoking hookah or drinking once in a while.. Self restraint is the key.

Nov 16, 2008 - I honestly don't care, I would rather indulge and maybe not live to be another year older living in misery were i can't even wipe my own ass and having to depend on someone else.
Turbanzrus1 Says:
Nov 19, 2008 - loolz well tell that to the ones that smoke and got sick and need someone to wipe their own ass for them.

Nov 20, 2008 - "Usury" as a sin! Only a silly, moronic faith would make up such a rule. A bank charging interest to get a decent return on its investment (you know, just in case they default or are late with payments and delay your bank's profit), understandably so, is "sinning against the Lord." What a crock! Here in the West, we pay interest, and we don't bitch about it or make excuses! Most people can pay off loans with interest. It's no big deal. But Islam has people whining and calling it a sin.
whoo689 Says:
Nov 20, 2008 - And why the hell is gambling so evil? Who is it hurting if you bet on a football game? It's so dumb to say that. It makes no sense. Morality without common sense is just arbitrary. You can't be moral just b/c "god says so." If God told you to murder your parents, would you do it? I wouldn't. There has to be a limit.
Turbanzrus1 Says:
Nov 20, 2008 - gambling hurts you retard. How many people have lost their lives and wealth because of gambling. A guy murdered his whole family wife and children because he gambled away his money.how many people have had their lives ruined from gambling?
Turbanzrus1 Says:
Nov 20, 2008 - ISLAM is beautiful you borrow Money and never pay interest on it...wow ur hilarious, have you heard the news? how many houses are foreclosed because people cant pay for them any more...interest finally caught up to you people and has ruined th system.U must not be a jew then , because even the old testament forbids usury and you must not be xtian because the only time Prophet Jesus(p) used force was when he whooped the people dealing with usury.
HelloFromTheGutter Says:
Nov 23, 2008 - The banks of muslim countries are the only ones who were not phased by the United States' economic plunge. It is a good idea not to charge interest, maybe try getting off your pedestal and actually taking an honest view at other people's points of views.. asshole. All interest does is help bank executives exploit millions of hard working people at the expense of the economy.
HelloFromTheGutter Says:
Nov 23, 2008 - Well for one, if god actually dictated fotr everyone to kill their parents, everyone would eventually be dead. You sound like my mom saying "If everyone else jumped off a bridge, would you do it?". If millions of people follow the same scripture for thousands of years, there must be a reason for it. Soo many people go to casinos and ruin their lives and their families lives after blowing all their money...
Arabeeko Says:
Nov 30, 2008 - I know lots of drunk people who get angry. Its about the person and not the religon. You cant tag everything with relgion, it also depends where they are from and how thier upbringing was.
Turbanzrus1 Says:
Nov 30, 2008 - LMAAAO yea wat better thing for an angry person to do then drink alcohol and get drunk and lose all his senses, then he can really do some damage.
uzayrmalik Says:
Dec 1, 2008 - Quran 5:93 Nicotine is NOT an intoxicant it is a stimulant.you probably don't smoke so you think it is easy to say ' dont smoke' or 'give it up'. i am a smoker and a muslim adn it is VERY difficult to give up my addiction (sheesha)
Turbanzrus1 Says:
Dec 1, 2008 - and an Intoxicant is somthing that stimulates you and bro im not saying ur evil but u can stop and u need to stop,,,,whether it is a stimulant or not doesnt make it less haram. It kills and thats a fact so its haram 100%
HelloFromTheGutter Says:
Dec 2, 2008 - Its just kinda a wierd coincidence that they're all Muslims and all have that problem...
HelloFromTheGutter Says:
Dec 2, 2008 - Then smoke weed or hookah. I didn't say anything about getting drunk, just like a drink once in a while..
HelloFromTheGutter Says:
Dec 3, 2008 - Caffeine's a stimulant, does that make coffee haram?
Turbanzrus1 Says:
Dec 3, 2008 - sex is also a stimulant, smoking is haram not because it is an stimulant but because it kills.some stimulants are okay and some are not, smoking is not the times its ok.
RUMAYSAA Says:
