Montreal's unpronounceably--named AbitibiBowater Inc., North America's third largest pulp and paper concern, will cut more than one-third of the union jobs at its Newfoundland plant.The papermill at Grand Falls Windsor is one of the largest employers in central Newfoundland, but has long been plagued by financial problems and a weak market. 171 jobs will be lost under a restructuring plan.George McDonald, local president for the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers union, told CBC News that the laborers, carpenters and finishers he represents are in disbelief.McDondald sad that..."The only way you can run that mill, by cutting that local in half, is by bringing in a private contractor to do it. These people deserve these jobs, they gave their life to this company."AbitibiBowater Inc. was formed last year through the merger of South Carolina's Bowater and Montreal's Abitibi-Consolidated.
