Sep 7, 2008 - Here he is, thanks to HWY61. All the pieces in place for a legend to be. Even by 1949 standards, the pace is good, the comedy sharp. Nobody but the Great One could take the most dire circumstances and turn them into a romp. Good job.

Sep 7, 2008 - Thanks. That's a five star comment if I ever got one.

Sep 10, 2008 - This episode originally aired in October 1949 without a laugh track; one was added for the 1977 reissue of the series by producer Irving Brecher, who said he didn't have the money to add one at the time- he was paying $2000 out of his own pocket every week to make up the deficit cost of filming the 26 episodes starring Gleason. This one was adapted from a November 12, 1948 radio script originally featuring William Bendix, who couldn't do the TV show in '49 because of his RKO movie contract..

Sep 30, 2008 - Thank you thank you thank you! For posting these Jackie Gleason Life of Riley episodes! I havent seen these since the mid-80s when I got my very first VCR. I used it to tape these episodes (they aired at 5:30am) while I was sleeping. Sadly, I neglected to save them because I couldnt afford to buy more videotapes, so I had to tape over them. They are now on DVD, but I cant afford the price. (around 55 bucks for the 26 Jackie Gleason episodes). More, more, more! :-)

Sep 30, 2008 - What a shame that you had to tape over them! I hate to add to your regret but all I have left of The Life of Riley is one episode in which Gleason does not appear. I will double check though.

Oct 5, 2008 - When I came across these episodes with Gleason I was surprised also. I've heard the expression but never knew that there was a television show named The Life of Riley.
