Let's talk about REAL FLUTE. What I mean by that is...why is it that on youtube there are so few professional classical musicians posting self-made videos? Perhaps it is because the cult of perfection that has been created through the use of sophisticated digital editing in audio recording has made us afraid to document and distribute our performances in a format which is unedited and...REAL. Professional musicians are expected to, and expect themselves, to sound perfect in any recorded media. Digital editing has set the standard far above what is achieved in live performance settings. Even many "live" recordings are edited (after the concert, any problem spots are corrected in the studio). So why post videos that may show us as imperfect? Because music making is still an art and it doesn't have to be digitally perfect to be moving and inspiring. We can take the magic of the live performance and share it through recorded media with the ease of the internet. So call me crazy, but I am starting an experiment to video record myself as often as possible and post on you tube. Some videos will be taken from concerts, some from rehearsals, some from practice sessions, and some from "video jam sessions." I am starting with video jam sessions of me attacking some of the Telemann Fantasies and I'll go from there. Tell me what you think about my REAL music. The only video editing I am capable of is simple cuts between movements. The rest is all me. Please share your REAL videos with me! (p.s. since launching my REAL FLUTE project, there has been an explosion of flutists posting videos to youtube and many of you have added your videos as video responses to my videos, and I have enjoyed watching them.)Learn more about Nina at www.REALFLUTEproject.com
